Former US Open champion Marin Cilic lamented not finishing on the podium of the men’s singles event at the Rio Olympic Games that ended on Sunday.

Croatia’s Cilic won his opening two matches in straight sets before being shown the exit door by in-form Frenchman Gael Monfils in the pre-quarterfinals.

“Not winning medals at the Olympics is a bad result,” bewailed Cilic (via, who also partnered compatriot Marin Draganja only to be sent packing in the first round by the Serbian duo of Novak Djokovic and Nenad Zimonjic.

He added: “I played well and was just two matches away for a medal chance. Again this would, according to the criteria, be a failure. Too bad, because I’m always motivated for Olympics, playing for Croatia and fighting for an Olympic medal that I miss.”

Meanwhile, the 27-year-old will look to shrug off the disappointment when he participates at this week’s Cincinnati Masters, followed by the prestigious US Open 2016 – a tournament he “particularly looks forward to.”
