Nick Kyrgios has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons in the past. The young Australian has faced immense flak for his blunt behavior on and off the court.

However, he received an uncommon praise from tennis legend Boris Becker, who not only backed his demeanor, but also touted him as a potential top-ranked player.

“He’s (Kyrgios) famed for the wrong reasons. He’s a really good tennis player, and he has what it takes. He’s just a little bit confused about what’s important nowadays,” Becker was quoted as saying by Radio Times.

Kyrgios, 20, found himself under the scanner after a controversy-marred match against France’s Richard Gasquet at the Wimbledon. The hullabaloo piled up following his remarks on Stanislas Wawrinka’s alleged girlfriend that garnered further criticism.

But, Becker believes that the sport needs more characters like him.

“I think what happened in Wimbledon, the US hard court season was a learning curve for him. If he gets his mentality together, if he gets the right guys around him, he’s a future number one.

“Tennis needs stars. Tennis needs people to carry it to different places. He looks different, he speaks different, he acts different.”
