In-form Spanish tennis player Garbine Muguruza gifted herself a perfect birthday present after she clinched a 1-6 6-2 6-1 victory against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni to reach the quarter-finals of the China Open in Beijing, thereby booking her place for the year-ending WTA Championships in Singapore.

The 22-year-old Muguruza, who achieved her career-best ranking of No. 5 last week, overcame a rusty start to pull off a three-set battle in an hour and 22 minutes. Besides breaking her opponent’s serve on six occasions, she annihilated Lucic-Baroni’s first serve in the deciding set to move on in style.

“I’m very excited to have qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore,” an ecstatic Muguruza was quoted as saying by the WTA Finals website. “This has been an exciting year for me. I have worked very hard this last month and I am really happy how it had paid off.

“Qualifying to Singapore is a great reward. I have great memories from Singapore last year playing doubles and this time I am looking forward to compete against the best singles players in the world.”

Muguruza, now, joins Russia’s Maria Sharapova and Romania’s Simona Halep in the elite field. The tournament is scheduled to be held from October 23 to November 1 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
