Australian Open 2015 – Serena Williams Survives Scare to Reach QFs; Victoria Azarenka Ousted
World No. 1 Serena Williams fired 17 aces as she rallied from a set down to seal her berth in the last-eight stage of the Australian Open 2015 on Monday.
The American powerhouse overcame a sluggish start to brush aside Spanish journeywoman Garbine Muguruza 2-6 6-3 6-2 at the Rod Laver Arena.
This win came as a sweet revenge for Williams, who had been stunned by Muguruza at the last year’s French Open, where the latter had pulled off a thrashing 6-2 6-2 victory.
Up next, Williams is scheduled to lock horns with 11th seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia, who caused a mini-upset by defeating former champion Victoria Azarenka 6-2 3-6 6-3 in the round of 16.
In the other match-ups, Venus Williams continued her dream run with a 6-3 2-6 6-1 upset of 6th seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, while Madison Keys got the better of compatriot Madison Brengle 6-2 6-4.
