Slovakia’s Anna Schmiedlova clinched her first title on the women’s tour after pulling off a stunning win over higher-ranked Camila Giorgi of Italy in the title-clash of the WTA Katowice Open on Sunday.

20-year-old Schmiedlova dominated her way throughout the match, eventually cruising for a 6-4 6-3 triumph over her 34th-ranked counterpart in the ultimate battle that lasted for an hour and 28 minutes.

“It’s something special. I still can’t believe it – it will take a long time for me to believe it,” a triumphant Schmiedlova told the official WTA website afterward. “

She continued: “I wasn’t nervous after that and was just taking it point by point. It was maybe one of the best matches I’ve played.”

By the virtue of this win, Schmiedlova got rewarded with 280 ranking points and $43,000 as prize money.

In the doubles final, Ysaline Bonaventure and Demi Schuurs also won their first title together following a 7-5 4-6 10-6 win over Italians Gioia Barberi and Karin Knapp.
