Angelique Kerber (R) could overtake Serena Williams as the new world number one

Serena Williams’ numero uno position is at risk after she pulled out of this week’s Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati citing shoulder injury.

The American powerhouse suffered a stunning ouster from the Rio Olympics last week, and has decided not to risk her fitness with the prestigious US Open coming up later this month.

Consequently, the 34-year-old’s No. 1 ranking – a position she has held for 183 uninterrupted weeks – could now be handed over to the current No. 2, Angelique Kerber.

Germany’s Kerber, who recently clinched the silver medal in Rio, could well be crowned the new No. 1 if she manages to bag the title here. Should this happen, she will add on 900 points to her tally of 6375, while Williams, being the defending champion, will squander 900 points from her present 7950 in any case.

To further aid Kerber’s quest, she had lost (to Belinda Bencic) in the first round of the same tournament last year.

With a bye in the first round, Kerber will open her campaign against either Ukrainian qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko or French giant-killer Kristina Mladenovic in the second round.
