Andrea Hlavackova has ruled herself out of the US Open after taking a nasty blow on her face during the Rio Olympic Games last week.

Representing the Czech Republic in doubles alongside Lucie Hradecka, Hlavackova lay flat on the court sobbing after being hit by a forehand volley off Switzerland’s Martina Hingis (partnering Timea Bacsinszky).

The 30-year-old underwent scans only to learn that she not only suffered an eye-injury, but also broke her nose. She, therefore, insists that it would be better off to skip the season-ending Grand Slam and recover from the injury.

“I realized I should not underestimate the injury and, instead of traveling to the United States, I will recover, avoiding impacts and pressures,” Hlavackova was quoted as saying by

The Czech doubles-specialist was, furthermore, critical of Hingis’ approach. “[Hingis] is one of the great players who know where to put the ball. When I saw the pictures and saw the space around me, I had to admit that she could have gotten the ball away,” she added.
