Nick Kyrgios squandered one-set advantage to go down 1-6 7-5 7-5 against Swiss rival Stan Wawrinka in a blockbuster first-round clash at the Montreal Masters.

Yet, there was something that stood out in favour of the Australian powerhouse.

Kyrgios’ forehand has always been one of his main strengths. But, if his Tuesday’s performance was anything to go by, he seems to have levelled up.

First, he smashed a 185 kmph cross-court forehand winner (which was appreciated by Wawrinka). Then, he went a notch further by unleashing a 205 kmph jump-smash before slapping the ball with a down-the-line winner later in the match.

“It’s great to see him back,” Kyrgios later said of Wawrinka, who has been on a comeback trail.

“Matches like that can give him positives … I can’t take any positives from that for me.

We do not second that, Kyrgios. 🙂 Juan Martin del Potro, are you listening?

As for Wawrinka, he is next scheduled to face Marton Fucsovics of Hungary later on Wednesday.
