Ever since Boris Becker retired from tennis, one may say the spectacle of dive-volleying vanished. Thursday’s play at Wimbledon, however, had one such shot on display.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, the Greek 31st seed, wowed the crowd with an incredible dive-volley on his backhand during his second-round match against Jared Donaldson of the USA.

Tsitsipas’ commitment on the dive was such that he had his head banged in the process. It seems to have spurred him on though as he went on to triumph 6-3 6-3 3-6 4-6 6-3.

The 19-year-old hit 18 aces, won 77 per cent of the points on his first serve, clinched 30 points at the net and broke Donaldson’s serve five times to prevail in three hours and 25 minutes.

Tsitsipas, who reached the Barcelona Open final earlier this year (lost to Rafael Nadal), will look to carry the momentum when he locks horns with Thomas Fabbiano of Brazil in the third round.

This will be the first meeting between the two.
