Nick Kyrgios is more often than not in the news for all the wrong reason. On Tuesday, though, that wasn’t the case.

During his first-round match against Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin at Wimbledon, the controversial Australian star showed off his softer side by comforting a ball girl after one of his serves hit her on the arm.

At 2-2 in the fourth set, Kyrgios fired a 135mph ace that went straight at the ball girl. And even as both the players tried to comfort her, she couldn’t control her tears before being taken off the court.

Reacting to the incident, Kyrgios hailed the ballgirl for taking it ‘like a champ’ as he insisted even he would have cried had he been in her place.

“It was tough. Originally when I heard the sound, I though it [the serve] hit the scoreboard. But then I realized it was her arm and it was tough – she started crying, she took it like a champ though,” Kyrgios said after his 7-6 7-6 6-7 6-3 win.

“I would have been crying for sure. I would hope she’s alright. I’m assuming there would have been medical services.”

The 15th is next scheduled to face Robin Haase of the Netherlands.
