Gael Monfils fell out of the Antalya Open, quite literally.

The French tennis star, seeded fourth, went down 6-4 6-7 4-6 to top-seeded Adrian Mannirino of Spain in the semi-finals of the ATP 250 event on Friday.

As if the defeat in itself wasn’t excruciating enough, Monfils suffered an injury scare during the encounter that lasted just over two hours.

During an intense rally in the third game of the final set, Monfils twisted his left ankle while running to the net in an attempt to return a drop shot.

Consequently, he tripped over and was seen writhing in pain before being treated by his physio

Even as he recovered to carry on, Monfils couldn’t really find the rhythm as he was broken twice in the deciding set.

He will now compete at the next week’s Wimbledon Championships, where he has a tricky first-round opponent in countryman Richard Gasquet, a former top-10 player himself.
