Fabio Fognini often makes the news for his on-court outbursts. On Wednesday, though, he grabbed the limelight for something else.

During his second-round match against American youngster Noah Rubin, the Italian tennis star went through an embarrassing moment.

Rushing on to the net in an attempt to make a forehand return even before the ball bounced, Fognini missed the middle by a huge margin as the ball travelled behind him, and not to the other side of the net.

The crowd were amused as Fognini wore a wry smile on his face. One of the worst shots of all time?

However, the No. 2 seed recovered well from one-set deficit to pull off a 6-7 6-2 6-2 win over Rubin in one hour and 53 minutes.

Fognini will look to keep his French Open preparations on track when he locks horns with another American Tennys Sandgren in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
