Nick Kyrgios‘ US Open journey came to an abrupt end after a hip injury forced him to retire midway through his third-round match against Illya Marchenko on Sunday.

The Australian hope gave up while trailing 4-6 6-4 6-1 against his Ukrainian nemesis. And, he couldn’t hide his emotions.

During a changeover, Kyrgios shed tears under his towel as the physio attended him during a changeover.

“I feel like I’ve been hit by a bus,” 21-year-old told the chair umpire, as quoted by ESPN. “It’s not great. Yeah, I mean, to be fair, my hip was bothering me my first two matches and I got through. I guess it was just a matter of time.”

As for Marchenko, he moves on to the fourth round where he will take on No. 3 seed Stanislas Wawrinka.
