Fresh Injury Delays Thanasi Kokkinakis’ Comeback Bid

Young Australian tennis player Thanasi Kokkinakis has been ruled out of the next week’s US Open 2016 due to fresh injury concerns.

Kokkinakis had been out of action since last December due to a shoulder injury before he made a return at the Rio Olympics earlier this month, only to be shown the door by Portugal’s Gastao Elias in the first round itself.

Just when things appeared to reconcile, the 20-year-old – who has played just one match in 2016 – pulled his pectoral muscle while practicing forehand shots, and will sit out for about a fortnight consequently.

Kokkinakis’ withdrawal implies that World No. 16 Nick Kyrgios and No. 19 Bernard Tomic would be the only two serious male Australian contenders at the US Open, which is scheduled to get underway on August 29.
