Wrap-Up: Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams Move into Roland Garros Quarters

Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, the No. 1 seed, overcame a recurring rain interruption and a stiff challenge from 14th seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain to move on to the quarter-finals of the Roland Garros 2016.

Resuming the match at 3-6, 6-4, 4-1 from Tuesday’s rain intermission, the Serb looked in no mood to run out of gas as he put on a dominating show from then on to clinch a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-5 triumph on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Up next for Djokovic awaits a dangerous opponent in 7th-seeded Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic, who made short work of Spain’s 11th seed David Ferrer, winning 6-3, 7-5, 6-3.

2nd seed Andy Murray overcame a slow start to prevail over local hope Richard Gasquet en route the semi-finals. The Brit was stretched to the wire in the first two sets but eventually managed to pull off a 5-7, 7-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Moving on to the last-four stage, he’s scheduled to square-off against defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka, who brushed aside unseeded Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6.

In the women’s section, top-seeded American Serena Williams crushed her way to the quarter-finals following a 6-1, 6-1 demolition of Ukraine’s 18th seed Elina Svitolina.

Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, the 4th seed, also advanced to the last-eight stage after registering a 7-5 6-3 conquest of American Shelby Rogers.
