Contrary to the men’s singles results, the women’s section saw some of the top players crash out in the second round of the Italian Open in Rome on Wednesday.

Germany’s Angelique Kerber, the No. 2 seed, was the biggest casualty of the day, suffering a narrow 6-1 5-7 7-5 defeat at the hands of Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard. The marathon encounter went on for two hours and 22 minutes.

4th seed Victoria Azarenka suffered just the fourth defeat of the season after she was stunned by Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu, 6-3 6-2. The Belarusian star was outplayed in all the departments as her opponent claimed her first ever victory over Azarenka in their sixth meeting.

13th-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia also bowed out of the tournament following a 6-7 6-4 6-1 loss to American Christina Mchale. Mchale rode on her commanding serve and didn’t offer any break point opportunity to pull off a surprising defeat.

Elsewhere, Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, the No. 3 seed, survived the day of upsets as she kept the upset bug at bay by demolishing Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova 6-1 6-0 in just a 47-minute battle. Muguruza won all her 14 points on first serve and broke her opponent thrice each in both sets.
