Reflecting on the recent Maria Sharapova controversy, 14-time Grand Slam Rafael Nadal said that the Russian star should pay for her infringement, irrespective of whether it was done willfully or not.

Sharapova, one of the biggest names in the women’s circuit, was tested positive for meldonium, a substance she had been using for years on doctor’s prescription but was banned recently.

Nadal, just like everybody else, revealed that he was taken by surprise when he took the notice of this news.

“It is difficult to imagine that something like this can happen, but mistakes happen,” the Spaniard opined. “She should be punished. I want to believe it is a mistake for Maria. She didn’t want to do it. But obviously it is negligence. She must pay for it.”

The 29-year-old further mentioned that he is a ‘completely clean guy’, and that he’s never had the enticement of drawing on energy-boosting substances.

“I am a completely clean guy. I have never had the temptation of doing something wrong,” he asserted.
