Jimmy Graham’s Week 7 Status Still Up In The Air

New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham has been out of action since suffering a shoulder injury that forced him out of a Week 5 win over the lowly Tampa Bay Bucs.

Graham had a bye in Week 6 to recover, and it was believed that he would play against the tough Detroit Lions defense on Sunday. However, news broke that Graham was expected to miss an additional 2-3 weeks from the ailment.

Graham was apparently unable to move his shoulder when he suffered the injury, but he practiced on a limited basis on both Thursday and Friday of this week. Saints coach Sean Payton expressed optimism about Graham’s chances to play in Week 7, and ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett reported that Graham said he “doesn’t know if he’ll play” and his Week 7 status could come down to a pregame coach’s decision:

The Saints will need Graham if they want to defeat the NFL’s No. 1-ranked defense in their home stadium. If the All-Pro is unable to play this weekend, backups Josh Hill and Ben Watson would try to fill the massive void left by Graham.

But they will not be able to accomplish that lofty goal, and the Saints just haven’t looked like themselves this year. Drew Brees has been erratic and inconsistent, failing to throw for three or more touchdowns in a single game. Their defense has also been absolutely atrocious, allowing opponents to run through their line like a hot knife through butter.

Detroit may be without star wideout Calvin Johnson in Week 7, but they still have a bevy of offensive weapons including running backs Joique Bell and Reggie Bush, who should have a heyday against New Orleans’ Swiss cheese front.

Thankfully the Saints are playing in the relatively shallow NFC South, so they are far from out of contention. But they have to win now, and playing without Graham in a hostile environment certainly won’t help their chances.

Can the Saints turn it around in 2014?
