Netherlands vs Costa Rica Preview & Team News:

Holland’s late win against Mexico is being regarded as the lucky escape, with Robben winning a controversial penalty in the last minute of injury time and Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored to make win the game for dutch. Van Gaal started the game with 5-3-2 formation but after Mexico took the lead he changed the system to more conventional 4-3-3 which ultimately paid dividends.

Van Gaal Speaking after the match stated ” humidity played a role, but we were fitter and fresher than the Mexicans and players responded well to change in 4-3-3 system.

Huntelaar replaced Van Persie in 76th minute of the match but he is unlikely to start against Costa Rica with Holland most probably starting with 4-3-3 formation, Robben and Memphis Depay playing either side of Van Persie while Nigel De Jong is doubtful for this game having picked up injury early in mexico game and he is expected to be replaced by Clasie in the defensive midfield role.

Possible Starting Lineups:

We will keep updating this page with latest team news from both camps, here is how I expect both teams to lineup in the quarter final clash.

Match Predictions:

Holland got their lucky escape against Mexico but that can not overshadow the promise they have shown so far in the competition having beaten Spain 5-1, Australia 3-2 and Chile 2-0. They are the leading goalscorers in the competition and I expect them to beat Costa Rica convincingly on 5th july by atleast two goals. So I am going with 3-1 win for the netherlands.

Costa Rica’s superstar, Bryan Ruiz, plays in the Dutch Eredivisie (Major League) so he’s well known. Since the match against Mexico went bad playing defense, the Netherlands will go into attack mode – and that will be the end for the Los Ticos I’m afraid. LVG’s mastermind strategies might very well get the Dutch their first World Cup, as the competition overall does not look that impressive….

Costarica has big chances of winning this game. I predict they’ll score 2-1, and go to the semi finals.

I have not been into football but i have been impressed by to greats of football in this w.c. Messi( helped Arg score in last match and almost every match) and Robbin. I have not seen the speed for so many years but Robbin seem to be an oxygen to the modern football. Yeah he can be bit dramatic but who is not in football? I guess it would be nail biting fixure but netherland with the experience and nerves to handle big pressure, will surely help them grab a victory. In my prediction it will go to the Extra Time but in that Robbin will be difference.

why didnt Janmaat play the last games?

    • soebely

Janmaat is an upcoming player (defender that also goes forward to make the spaces in the field bigger) and van Gaal knew it was to hot for that kind of player to do a full match

Duarte of Costa Rica is suspended isnt he? Red card against Greece.

Seems you do not know about the only national team meeting between these two. With van Gaal as manager, in 2001, Costa Rica beat the Robben/Huntelaar U-20 WC team 3-1. So what do you think about the result now?

2001 is a long long time ago and both those players have gained experience since then and have improved tremendously… History doesn’t always help in predictions.

Its going to be tough for he Netherlands. Costa rica has shown potential this world cup and has surprised everyone. Netherlands has to play smarter than the last game. Netherlands will win 2-1

  • dean auld

Laughing at some of these comments, costa rica have went as far as they can go.theyve done great and in my eyes keylor navas the goal keeper is the one to take the credit.what a keeper.holland in book and 2-0 result.they wont deal with robbens pace and if they do the cards will be flying.wouldnt be surprised if costa rica see red.fair play costa rica but this is the end

  • RobbieMo

I understand that C/Rica U20 beat the Dutch, but Dutch footballers do progress better than most and with all due respect to Ruiz & Campbell, Robben & VP are more rounded players at this stage of their careers.

  • Rakesh Mallick

Well payed Navas, Tim Krool turned out to be the hero
