Last season’s Barclay’s Premier League winners Manchester City will make the trip up North this Sunday August 17th, as they look to to take out the Toon Army in their home turf of St. James Park. In only the second day of the new 2014-15 Premiership season, Alan Pardew’s XI will look to hold off one of the best teams in Europe at present, and improve on their 2013-14 Premier League 10th place. For Manuel Pelligrini, a good start to the season is essential, and the Geordies will do their best to throw a spanner in the works.

So first off let’s take a look at the possible starting XI for both squads ahead of their first Barclay’s Premier League game

Newcastle starting XI:(4-5-1) Krul, Taylor, Mbiwa, Coloccini (C), Haidara, Janmaat, Anita, Cabella, Sissoko, Colback, Gouffran

Manchester City Starting IX: (4-3-3)Joe Hart, Zabaletta, Kompany, Kolarov, Nastasic, Fernandinho, Toure, Silva, Navas, Dzeko, Nasri

Newcastle squad news: Papiss Cisse and Davide Santon remain injured, and will therefore be sidelined for Sunday’s game against the defending champions. Check Tiote and newly signed Dutch striker Siem De Jong will also play no part in the game as they remain some way from recovering from their knocks. Yoan Gouffran will have his work cut out up front on his own today.

Manchester City squad news: Newly loaned Chelsea top scoring midfielder Frank Lampard will likely be the lead substitute for the trip to St. James, while Alvaro Negredo sits out due to an injury. Goalkeeper Willy Caballero will likely sit out after his poor showing against Arsenal this past week, and striker Sergio Aguero is still not 100% after injury.

Chelsea v Newcastle United - Carling Cup 3rd Round

Keys to victory for Newcastle: Don’t get bullied, and use that 4-5-1 to your advantage. You know city have champagne play, and their current squad is easily as strong as it has ever been, but you have to make this a dirty fight. Use the extra man in midfield and break up the Sky Blues’ passing, nullifying their ability to feed their super-talented forwards. A draw would be great for the Toon Army, but you never know what can happen at St. James Park.

Keys to victory for Manchester City: Don’t get bogged down! Machester City has all the tools to become champions once again this year, and it’s all about living up to that potential. The squad is near-bulletproof, and Pellegrini’s men will need to keep it smooth and flowing against The Magpies. Keep the ball in midfield, and make use of the attacking formation, stretch the Newcastle defense and get in behind the fullbacks.

Newcastle vs Manchester City Barclay’s Premier League Predictions Alan Pardew’s mid-table team will put in a gallant effort, but will simply be unable to keep up with the pace set by Manchester City. The midfield and forwards play will be overwhelming for the Geordies, and look for a double from Dzeko, and one from Nasri in a 3-0 schooling by the champions.
