Nick Kyrgios dodged a bullet in the first round of Delray Beach Open, defeating fellow Australian and good friend John Millman 6-4 6-7 7-6.

And during the two-hour and five-minute encounter though, Kyrgios fired one of his own.

In the ninth game of the second set when, Kyrgios exhibited his brute power to unleash a monstrous forehand that Millman somehow managed to return.

The 23-year-old, however, failed to consolidate the point as he responded with a drop shot that was easily converted into a winner by Millman.

Kyrgios, who served 19 aces en route the win, later labelled himself ‘fortunate’ to have the power that he has.

“My serve keeps bailing me out of these types of matches, which is pretty fortunate for me,” he was quoted as saying by ATP World Tour.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. John is one of the toughest competitors on tour and he’s a good mate of mine, so I’m just happy to get through with the win.”

Kyrgios is scheduled to face the winner of the duel between Ivo Karlovic and Radu Albot next.
