It was a special occasion for Belgian tennis players Alison Van Uytvanck and Greetje Minnen when they squared off against each other at the Liqui Moly Open in Karlsruhe, Germany, on Monday.

For, Uytvanck and Minnen have been in a same-sex relationship since three years. But that didn’t stop them from going toe-to-toe in their first round match which the former won 6-4 1-6 6-1.

And at the end of the contest, that lasted one hour and 46 minutes, they shared a long embrace before kissing each other on the lips.

“We [would like to] see more people coming forward and saying ‘It’s OK.’ I think people would have more confidence,” Uytvanck, who played the doubles event with Minnen at Wimbledon recently, had told The Guardian.

“That would be something good, men would appreciate that. More people would come out – it would help to make it easier.”

“There must be some gay men out there. For me personally, a man, it would be more difficult to come out.”

Meanwhile, Uytvanck, the No. 2 seed, is next scheduled to take on Laura-Ioana Andrei of Romania for a place in the quarter-finals.
