Ben Stokes put his best foot forward as hosts England began their World Cup campaign with a clinical win over South Africa in London on Thursday.

After being put in to bat first, England were in a spot of bother at 111-3 in the 20 overs. Stokes, however, proved he belongs to the big stage as he stitched crucial partnerships with captain Eoin Morgan (57), Jos Buttler (18) and Chris Woakes (13) before perishing for 89 runs off 79 balls.

His effort ensured the hosts amassed 311-8 in 50 overs.

In response, South Africa never looked on course to chase down the total as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Even as Quinton de Kock (68) and Rassie van der Dussen (50) were among the runs, they eventually were all out for just 207 runs in just 39.5 overs.

And Stokes produced a moment of brilliance on the field.

During the 35th over of South Africa’s batting, Andile Phehlukwayo slog-swept one off leg-spinner Adil Rashid. It looked like it would go all the way, only for Stokes to come out of nowhere and to pull off the catch out of thin air… that too with one hand.

No wonder, even he himself couldn’t believe for a while, let alone the stunned spectators.

Twitter users were quick to heap praise on the all-rounder.

“I’ve watched it about 30 times and I still can’t believe he’s caught it,” one person wrote. Another one went to the extent of calling it the “greatest catch of all time.”

“Nah Ben Stokes, that ain’t normal.”
