Rafael Nadal fans accuse French Open of partiality after Roger Federer gets preferential treatment

The French Open embroiled itself in a bit of controversy after preferring Roger Federer over Rafael Nadal to play on the main court in its ‘order of play’ for Wednesday.

While both players got their respective campaigns under way on the newly-renovated Philippe Chatrier court, Federer’s scheduled second round match against Oscar Otte stayed put on the same court but Nadal’s fixture against Yannick Maden was slated to be held on court Suzanne Lenglen.

No wonder, the Spaniard’s fans fumed at the officials’ decision, labelling it an ‘insult’.

“I know a lot of people don’t care about scheduling, but I’m one of those people who think Nadal’s earned the right to never play off Chatrier,” one person wrote of the event’s 11-time champion.

“#Rafa who has raised 11 @rolandgarros trophies, who is the 2-time defending champ is on #Lenglen. Fed 1 time champ who has never beaten Rafa here gets Chatrier,” another one added.

“Nadal on Lenglen. What has the world come to?” and “It’s an insult pure & simple,” were a couple of other comments.

Even one Federer fan was surprised by the schedule. “I love Federer, but he shouldn’t get priority at this tournament over Nadal,” he wrote.

As it stands, Federer will play third after Stephens versus Sorribes and Nishikori versus Tsonga, with Nadal taking the court second after Kozlova versus Svitolina.
