World No. 8 Tomas Berdych has pulled out of the upcoming US Open after being diagnosed with appendicitis during the ongoing Cincinnati Masters.

The Czech tennis star took to social media to share the news with his fans, as he divulged that he will be flying back to Europe for further analysis and treatment instead of risking his health at the season-ending Grand Slam that kicks-off on August 29.

“Dear Fans, I’m very disappointed to announce that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year. I was just diagnosed with Appendicitis in Cincinnati so I will be flying back to Europe for additional checks and treatment. I will need to take some time off to recover fully but I know that I will get back as strong as ever. I’m looking forward to playing again as soon as possible. I kindly thank you for your support,” he wrote.

The 30-year-old’s best appearance at the US Open came in 2012, where he reached the last-four stage after pulling off an upset win over Roger Federer in the quarter-finals.

As a result of his withdrawal, Berdych is set to lose 180 ranking points, having made it to the fourth round last year here.
