World Cup 2015: Zimbabwe beat UAE by 4 wickets

Zimbabwe continued their sublime form at the World Cup 2015 as they pulled off a four-wicket conquest of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at Nelson on Thursday. This was Zimbabwe’s first victory at the sport’s mega event, having previously gone down fighting to hot favorites South Africa in their first outing.

Earlier, Afghanistan were forced in to bat first after losing the toss. Despite bringing up the rear through a couple of early wickets, they came back strong through a half-century from Shaiman Anwar (67), who was ably supported by Khurram Khan (45), Krishnachandran Karate (34) and Swapnil Patil (32). Later, Amjad Javed (25*) and Mohammad Naveed (23*) piled on runs quickly to bolster their scoreboard to 285-7.

Chasing a healthy total, Zimbabwe got off to a flying start through openers Sikandar Raza (46) and Regis Chakabva (35), before the duo eventually perished after a 64-run stand. Brendan Taylor (47) and Sean Williams (76*), then, looked solid in the middle. The former surrendered and Craig Ervine (42) joined hands with Williams to help their team chase down the target with two overs to spare.

Williams, who also chipped in with two wickets with the ball, was adjudged the Man of the Match for his all-round performance.
