Riding on a scintillating century from opener Moeen Ali, England pulled off a dominating 119-run conquest of Scotland at Christchurch on Monday. Surprisingly, this was their maiden triumph at the coveted tournament, having lost both their previous encounters to co-hosts Australia and New Zealand respectively.

Earlier, the flip of the coin went Scotland’s way, who decided to bowl first, which eventually proved to be a mistaken preference as England went on to pile up 303-8 in 50 overs. Moeen shone with a 128-run knock, while Ian Bell (54) and Eoin Morgan (46) also turned up with decent contributions.

In response, Scotland batsmen kept on squandering wickets at regular intervals, even as opener Kyle Coetzer (71) clung on to one end for over half an inning. Furthermore, the likes of Steven Finn (3/26), Chris Woakes (2/25), James Anderson (2/30), and Moeen (2/47) ensured that their opponents don’t reach beyong 184.

Moeen was adjudged the Man of the Match for his supreme all-round performance.
