India’s stand-in skipper Virat Kohli’s heroics went in vain as Australia showed nerves of steel to pull off a stunning 48-run win over India in the first Test match in Adelaide.

Earlier, India overcame early jolt in their quest to chase down 363 runs on the fifth and final day, before Kohli joined hands with opener Murali Vijay to come to the visitors’ rescue.

After Shikhar Dhawan (9) and Cheteshwar Pujara (21) departed without making notable contributions, Kohli and Vijay looked formidable as the duo partnered 195 runs for the 3rd wicket, before the latter fell at 99.

Subsequently, a lethal bowling performance from off-spinner Nathan Lyon (7-152) saw India surrender 8 wickets for just 73 runs, as the touring team got bundled out for 315 runs, 48 runs short of the target.

Despite ending on a losing side, Kohli’s 141-run knock made him only the second player in the history of the sport to hit centuries in both the innings of debut match as the Test captain.

The second Test match begins from December 17 in Brisbane.
