South Africa cricket team is currently visiting New Zealand due to play a T20I, three Tests and five ODI matches there against New Zealand. Their tournament was about to start in 14th February, 2017 against New Zealand XI which was a warm up match. But, due to rain, the match was abandoned before the toss. So now, Proteas are waiting to play T20I competition directly which will start in nxt 17th February, 2017 at Auckland. Though, Faf du Plessis will lead the Proteas team in T20 and Test competition but ODI captaincy is still in Villiers hand. No doubt about the capability of AB de Villiers but he was ruled out from the team for long due to injury but joined the team during the series against the Lions and also he made his mark there. By his lead, Proteas whitewashed Sri Lanka in ODI series. Now, he is going to lead South Africa team in next ODI series against Black Caps as well.

However, South Africa cricket team has currently moved to the top of ODI ranking according to the ICC new update. They have achieved the position by whitewashing Sri Lanka in last series against them by 5 – 0. As a result, after more than two years, Proteas has finally moved to the top by replacing Australia.

Before the beginning of the ODI series against Sri Lanka, Proteas were just four points behind than Australia. But, Australia lost the series against New Zealand by 2 – 0 and on the other hand, Proteas won the series against Sri Lanka by 5 – 0 which was enough to replace the top position.

Since the beginning of the current ranking position, it is the 5th time for Proteas to achieve the top position. In November, 2014, South Africa last time visited the top ranking. Calculating their last few ODI matches result, Since last May, 2016, team SA played total 17 ODI matches and won total 13 matches where 11 victory was consecutive. Now, after beating the Lions, they received three points and Australia lost points by losing against Black Caps. Now, Proteas still 3 points ahead of them and to keep the result, SA needs to win the next series against New Zealand by at least 3 – 2.
