Former India wicket-keeper Nayan Mongia heaped praise on present captain and stumper, MS Dhoni, touting him as not only a ‘phenomenal batsman’, but also the ‘safest keeper’ in the world at present.

Dhoni had been facing relentless criticism of late, before his unbeaten 92-run knock helped Team India level the ongoing 5-match ODI series against South Africa on Wednesday.

However, Mongia seems displeased with what has been the reason behind Dhoni facing incessant criticism.

“He (Dhoni) is a wonderful player. His average, which is over 50, speaks for him,” Mongia told the PTI (via First Post). “As a batsman he is just phenomenal and he has been like this for years. So I don’t see any reason why people are criticizing him.”

Mongia, who possesses an aggregate of 209 catches and 53 stumping in his career, also showered accolades upon Dhoni’s skills behind the wicket, rating him ahead of all his current counterparts.

“After (Adam) Gilchrist retired, we have Dhoni, who is very good. You have (Quinton) de Cock in South Africa, AB (de Villiers) in T20 (who) is very good. But if you see now in world cricket, Dhoni is the safest keeper around,” he added.
