Mohammad Azharuddin insists that India’s limited overs skipper, MS Dhoni, should be granted free will to decide when to call a time on his career. This comes just days after former India captain, Sourav Ganguly, doubted Dhoni’s abilities to carry on the leadership till 2019 World Cup.

“That is definitely Ganguly’s personal opinion. I respect his thoughts but at the same time it all depends on Dhoni – what he feels about himself and his future. How he feels mentally and physically, how demanding the sport has become over a period of time,” CricBuzz quoted Azharuddin.

Dhoni, 34, has been under the scanner of late following his team’s dismal performance at the World T20 earlier this year at home. The misery piled on for him after his Indian Premier League (IPL) side, the Rising Pune Supergiants, became the first team to get eliminated.

However, Azharuddin insists Dhoni deserves to get hold of the freedom to assess his own performance and act accordingly, given that he’s led India to some great moments in the past, including World Cup triumphs and the numero uno position in the rankings across the formats.

“He has been a great ambassador for the game. So, we should give him that chance as he has been one of the finest captains India has seen. He has led India to all major trophies and also to the No. 1 position in the world.

“People go through ups and downs and it’s really hard for them to maintain that level but we also need to look at what he has done in the past and what he’s capable of doing.”
