It’s not often that someone from West Indies – a country where genuine fast-bowlers are found in abundance – seems mighty impressed by the pacers from India, where you don’t normally come across someone clocking 145-150 kmph consistently. But, the young lot of Indian speed-stars have succeeded in garnering the attention.

Former West Indies fast-bowler Andy Roberts appeared mighty impressed with India’s Umesh Yadav, touting him as the first genuine pacer from the country over the likes of Kapil Dev and Javagal Srinath.

“I am very impressed with Yadav. He is the first genuine fast bowler that India has got. I don’t think before him India had a genuine fast bowler,” 64-year-old Roberts told the Press Trust of India (PTI).

“Kapil Dev was a swing bowler, but he was not a quick bowler. India’s first-ever quick bowler that I saw was Javagal Srinath but again, he was not in that league of fast men like Yadav, who can hit mid-90s.”

He also named Mohammed Shami as another authentic quick from the country.

“Another boy Shami is also good,” he continued. “But I want both of them to be a bit more aggressive. And when I mean aggressive, I don’t mean one needs to swear.”

The duo of Yadav and Shami caught many eyes after spearheading India’s challenge at the World Cup 2015. Albeit India managed to stay up till the semifinals (lost to eventual winners Australia), the pacy duo emerged as two of the leading wicket-takers at the coveted event.
