Former Australia tennis player Ashleigh Barty has decided to take up professional cricket. The 19-year-old is best known for her runner-up finish alongside doubles partner Casey Dellacqua at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open – all in the year 2013 alone.

Barty, who had taken an indefinite break from tennis after the US Open 2014, has signed up with the Brisbane Heat for the inaugural women’s Big Bash League, and is believed to be a promising all-rounder, reports ESPNcricinfo.

“It is tough when you’re by yourself and I think that’s why team sport is so appealing,” Barty was quoted as saying. “I’m still connected very much to tennis and everything it has to offer. It’s been a part of me since I was four years old and is never going to leave me.

“There’s never a lonesome moment on the field if you’re struggling. There’s (sic) 10 other girls that can help you out and get you through the tough times,” she added.

Interestingly, Barty is not the first one to make a sporting change. South Africa’s ODI captain AB de Villiers was a part of his country’s junior Davis Cup team before he got into Cricket. It’s also not an obscure fact that Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara considered tennis as his first sport.

Interesting, isn’t it?
