Explosive batsman, Chris Gayle, smashed a record 31-ball 77 as West Indies stunned South Africa in the first of the 3-match T20I series on Friday.

Earlier, South Africa’s T20I skipper, Faf du Plessis, won the toss and decided to bat first. Eventually, the hosts posted a healthy 165-4 in restricted 20 overs’ quota, thanks to an unbeaten half-ton from Rilee Rossouw (51*).

In response, Gayle ripped through the hosts’ bowling unit, smashing 8 sixes and 5 fours en route his 77-run knock, as West Indians chased down the target with 4 wickets to spare in the last over.

“It was nice to get going, right from the start,” CricBuzz quoted Gayle as saying. “The ball was coming on nicely to the bat, but there were times when the ball stopped a bit after pitching.

“They bowled short at me, which made my task easier, I could free my arms and disturb their line and lengths.”

Up next, the two teams now move on to Johannesburg for the second T20I on Sunday.
