West Indies batsman Chris Gayle backed controversial England cricketer Kevin Pietersen to make his return to the international circuit across all the three formats of the sport.

Pietersen has been at loggerheads with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), who continues to snub the former for allegedly having a bad relationship with the team management.

However, Gayle backed England’s ‘best’ and ‘class’ player to represent his country in all the formats.

“He should be playing for England; there are no two ways about it,” Gayle was quoted as saying by the IANS. “They (ECB) must have their reasons but we would love to see your best player in action, out in the middle, entertaining.

“It doesn’t matter what format – Test, 50-over, Twenty20 – he’s a class player.”

34-year-old Pietersen – a veteran of 104 Tests, 136 ODIs and 37 T20Is – last played for England in 2014 against Australia.
