Bangladesh might be the underdogs going into the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against India at home, but Mashrafe Mortaza believes that his side has the aptitude to cause major upsets, and that defeating India won’t be unattainable.

“I firmly believe India are favourites but when we get on the field, we don’t think who is favorite or who is not,” a confident Mortaza was quoted as saying by Star Sports. “I hope we can play our best cricket. After the 2007 World Cup, we started to believe that we can beat any team.”

Bangladesh’s surge came into the limelight after the Asian minnows fought off the odds to reach the quarterfinals of the World Cup 2015, where in process they stunned Team England before being shown the door by two-time champions India in the last-eight stage.

This was followed by an incredible performance against Pakistan at home, where the hosts pulled off a stunning clean sweep in the three-match ODI series, and piled on the visiting team’s misery with a triumph in the one-off Twenty20 International.

“Of course, if we are playing against a higher-ranked team they will be the favourites but we don’t think that we can’t beat them,” Mortaza asserted further. “Bangladesh is one of the teams doing well in ODIs right now apart from Australia, England, India and New Zealand.

“I have told the boys to look at the statistics that we are not far behind any of these teams.”
