Currently the new season of Plunket Shield is going on. It is the 89th season of Plunket Shield where total six franchise teams have taken part. Plunket Shield is basically a domestic cricket competition which can be called as first class cricket in New Zealand. The competition is basically a long format cricket where each match contains four days. In the 89th season of Plunket Shield which started in 23rd October, 2017 and still going on. In the first match of nine round, Wellington faced defeat by an innings and 56 runs against Northern Districts.

Wellington and Northern Districts are both very potential competitors in the tournament where Wellington won more title of Plunket Shield than Northern Districts. But in recent time, Northern Districts are in good form.

The match between Wellington and Northern Districts was in the round nine match and it started in 25th March, 2018. Basin Reserve in Wellington was the host venue. Earlier in 25th March, 2018 Northern Districts won the toss and let Wellington to bat first. So, local team Wellington came to open their first innings and scored 137 runs only. They played 49.3 overs in their opening innings where Luke Woodcock scored 51 runs highest. Ish Sodhi took seven wickets for Northern and destroyed the Wellington innings alone.

Later, Northern Districts came to open their inaugural innings. They scored 32 runs at the beginning and lost all wickets. However, Northern Districts played 91.3 overs where their player Tim Seifert scored highest 124 runs for the team. Jeetan Patel took five wickets highest for the team Wellington. So, Northern successfully led the match with more than 150 runs in their first innings.

Later, Wellington came to bat for the 2nd innings. Like the first innings they once again faced batting collapsed. Woodcock and Papps started the innings for Wellington. They scored 22 and 39 runs respectively. Later, Murdoch and captain Bracewell tried a bit but could not added much runs. Most of the players did not score two figure runs for the team. Patel and Newton held the innings for few long where they score 17 and 18 runs respectively. So, by playing 49.1 overs Wellington lost all wickets. In the meantime, they scored 130 runs only.

Sodhi once again was the key bowler of Northern Districts. He took five wickets where Baker and Gibson took two wickets each for the team. As a result Norther Districts did not has to play 2nd innings but won by an innings and 56 runs so far.
