With Midas Touch, MS Dhoni Still a Great Player: Steve Waugh

Barring the recent T20I success, MS Dhoni has had a tough time leading his side in the limited-overs format. Consequently, some have called for Test skipper Virat Kohli to take over the reins across all formats of the game.

To add on to it, hosts India suffered a humiliating loss to New Zealand in the World T20 opener. However, former Australia captain Steve Waugh believes that Dhoni still has the Midas touch by his side, and that he still is a great cricketer.

“Dhoni seems to have that Midas touch. He gives all Indians that sense of comfort – when he walks to the wicket; every Indian feels he would do something good,” the 50-year-old told of Dhoni, as quoted by India Today.

“He generally delivers when the team needs him to. I still think he’s great player, particularly in limited-overs cricket,” he continued. “As a keeper he has played 64 T20I games, the second most in international cricket and that shows how resilient and tough he is.”

A loss to New Zealand in the tournament opener means that India now needs to win all of their remaining three matches (against Pakistan, Australia and Bangladesh) to ensure a berth in the semi-final of the sport’s mega-event.

Waugh, further, believes that although the upcoming fixture against Pakistan would be one of the toughest moments of Dhoni’s career, the veteran is competent enough to shrug off the nerves during such situations.

“The India-Pakistan game on Saturday will be one of the toughest moments in his career,” he said. “Losing the first game has put an enormous amount of pressure on India. However, Dhoni is one guy, who doesn’t get affected by pressure.”
