yuriorkis gamboa vs joel montes de oca

Yuriorkis Gamboa will attempt to come back from his first professional loss, and his opponent is relatively unknown….

Former WBA and IBF featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa was stopped in his track this past June. Fighting well above his natural weight class of featherweight, the Cuban Olympic gold medallist made the move to lightweight against undefeated Terrance Crawford. It proved to be a foolish decision.

Although Gamboa made the fight interesting and exciting with his high pace, he was overpowered in the middle rounds and eventually finished within the distance. The loss was Gamboa’s first as a pro.

Many expected the man known as El Ciclon de Guantánamo to look for a tune-up fight upon his return, but few expected Joel Montes de Oca to be in the frame. Don’t know that name? That’s because he really hasn’t fought anyone of merit during his four-year 18-3 career.

The Mexican super featherweight has been involved in some rather controversial pairings during his span, including facing a debut professional only two fights ago.

The fight will take place in Oca’s home territory of Mexico, where he has fought all of his 21 bouts as a pro. Gamboa will look to right the ship after dropping to 23-1, but you could argue there are much better options out there than JMdO.
