Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was crowned the new WBO World super welterweight champion following his ninth-round stoppage win over holder Liam ‘Beefy’ Smith at the AT&T stadium in Texas.

Coming into the match as the heavy favourite, Alvarez (48-1-1) was compelled to put his best foot forward in order to overcome a determined performance from Smith (23-1-1).

Alvarez began the match in style, moving quickly around the box and using his left uppercut to harm his opponent. Smith, however, made quick observations to mend his performance midway.

It, however, wasn’t long before Alvarez introduced his A game starting in the sixth round. Smith sustained a cut above his right eye and was floored in next two consecutive rounds, before an imposing left hook from Alvarez ultimately put an end to Smith’s valor.

The title has augmented his odds of signing a blockbuster clash with middleweight ruler Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin. And, Alvarez couldn’t avoid the inevitable talks following his triumph.

“I fear no one. I am the best fighter right now. We offered GGG twice the money to fight. He didn’t accept,” he told Box Nation.

The fight would perhaps be the second biggest professional boxing bout of the century, only behind the epic clash of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquio.
