Mayweather PPV numbers are on the decline

Showtime will be starting the 13 September 2014 PPV Mayweather-Maidana II 1 hour earlier than the normal 9:00 PM to for the sake of better PPV experience all around the states. Mayweather is undoubtedly the biggest PPV star but why his recent PPV buys are on the decline ?

CBS Corporation owns 15 billion worth Showtime who has a mega six fight deal with Mayweather out of which three has already been done and the average sale of the PPV stands at around 1.34 million buys. The biggest one was against Canelo Alvarez which is do date the most bought PPV boxing event in history generating over $150 million with 2.2 million PPV buys.

Looking at the figures no other active boxers even come close to what Mayweather fights can generate, even Manny Pacquiao has his PPV numbers decreased big time with on average 700,000 buys in his last three fights.

Are Mayweather PPV numbers legitimate of Showtime are trying to hype things ?

Showtime released Mayweather-Canelo PPV numbers within days after the fight and everybody knew that it was the biggest fight in terms of revenue but showtime has yet to release numbers of Robert Guerrero and Marcos Maidana fights but they claim that both fights did over a million buys. We take a look at Mayweather’s HBO and Showtime PPV numbers.

Mayweather HBO PPV Numbers
9 9.6 million 1 Million+ $543 Million

Mayweather SHOWTIME PPV Numbers
Mayweather vs Guerrero no released (less than 800,000) $60 million
Mayweather vs Canelo 2.2 Million $150 million
Mayweather vs Maidana not released (just over 1 million) $75 million
Total 4 million PPV buys $285 million

In the Robert Guerrero fight it was reported that the PPV buys are over a million but showtime never bothered releaseing the figures which I believe is because the card under performed in terms of revenue. That is why Canelo fight came into the frame as showtime wanted to get the maximum juice out of Mayweather name and they also put together Garcia vs Mattysse in the undercard which went a long way to boost the buys, the most recent fight was against Maidana where again numbers are not released but rumours are that this card would have got more than 1 million buys with Amier khan and Broner both fighting on the undercards.

So what I am trying to say is that even Mayweather is finding it hard to keep the PPV numbers and the reason for that is the fact that he is only fighting boxers which he wants to fight not what public wants to see. The Canelo fight was somthing got the boxing fans excited and we saw the PPV result.

Next he is fighting Maidana again and I am sure that this time the PPV numbers will be lower than the first fight unless showtime and Mayweather can come up with somthing special on the undercards.

Mayweather Net worth 2013-2014Does the declining PPV numbers have any impact on Mayweather earnings ?

Well from the looks of things Mayweather is going home the happier than Showtime after the fight, he has topped Forbes yearly richlist for the third consecutive year.

Showtime has guarranteed $200 million to Mayweather for the six fight deals and it can increase to $250 million if the PPV sales are favourable and its fair to say that he can easily top $250 million mark as well if he were to fight Manny Pacquiao and the boxers public wants him to fight.

Mayweather Recent Fights Payouts
Mayweather vs Maidana 1 $32 Million $25m $57 million
Mayweather vs Canelo $41.5 Million $40m $80 million
Mayweather vs Guerrero $32 Million $22m $54 million
Mayweather vs Cotto $32 Million $32m 64
