Amir Khan has admitted that fighting Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was a mistake, almost two years after being knocked out in their bout.

Khan had packed some pounds to fight Canelo at 155 pounds, but was floored in the sixth round by a huge right hand from Canelo.

“Honestly, it’s a fight I should never have gone into because he was physically too big,” the 31-year-old was quoted as saying by boxingnewsonline.net.

“I had my chances, I thought I could outbox him and be smart and not get hit but obviously he got me with a big shot,” added Amir, who was indeed giving Canelo a run for his money before being knocked out

“Before that, everything was going well but it’s boxing and you are going to get hit and you are going to get hit with big shots and he caught me with a tremendous overhand right that would have knocked most people out,” he continued.

The Brit, however, ruled out another possibility of going up the weight ladder ever again.

“But as an experience if I’d never taken that fight I would always have thought, ‘What would have happened?’ Now I’ve done it I can say I tried it, it didn’t work for me and that’s not going to happen again – where I move up in weight and make the same mistake,” he said.

Khan (31-4, 19 KOs), a former two-time world champion, is scheduled to make his comeback at Echo Arena, Liverpool, come April 21. His opponent has not been finalized yet.
