While the unbeaten Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (37-0-0) may be the slight favorite over Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (49-1-1) for their middleweight unification fight, heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua insists it could not be the case on the fight night, come September 16.

“I hope Canelo wins, not that I don’t like GGG. I have just been riding with Canelo for a long time,” Joshua, the current IBO, IBF and WBA world champion, told Daily Mail.

While the 35-year-old Golovkin is known to have never been knocked down or knocked out, Canelo, at 27, has achieved what not many could at his age.

Joshua, therefore, believes that a successful outcome for Canelo could pave the way for greater things in the future.

“He (Canelo) is 27 and the man has achieved so much and he’ll be one of the fathers. He’s still a baby but he’ll be one of the fathers in the sport, give him another 10 years. He’ll be around for a long time and I think he’ll do great things for the sport.

“So I have been riding with Canelo for a long time but it’s going to be a tough fight because GGG is from Kazakhstan, he has the good foundations of a boxer. But so has Canelo, so I’ll put my money on him.”
